From YPM to Founder: Joshua's Journey of Growth and Giving Back
Meet Joshua, also known as Jago Xyen (pronounced "Jar-go Zen"), a young leader, artist and entrepreneur with a passion for fostering community and creativity. As the founder of World Xyen Fashions, Joshua has channelled his artistic talents and experiences with the Young People's Movement (YPM) into a brand focused on peace, positivity, and empowerment. "World Xyen Fashions is more than clothes; it’s a way to spread peace and love," Joshua says of his brand, whose motto is "Peace inside, peace worldwide."
The meaning behind "Xyen" reveals his thoughtful approach to his work and identity. "X is for the unknown, Y for why, E for emotions, and N for never-ending," he explains. "It’s about exploring emotions and always staying curious." For Joshua, art and fashion are forms of self-expression and his involvement with YPM has been a significant force in shaping his journey.
Finding Direction with YPM
Joshua’s connection with YPM started in 2021 at a community event at the Horniman Museum, where he met Spiral and other key members of the movement. Although Joshua had completed college and successfully graduated from university - he was still unsure of his next steps. YPM, however, offered a network of mentors and peers who recognised his potential and encouraged him to explore it fully. "YPM made me realise that I was more than what I thought of myself," he reflects. He gained skills, purpose, and a sense of belonging through the programme.
Once involved, Joshua embraced the movement’s many offerings, from practical skill-building sessions in event planning and public speaking to cultural experiences, like the time he joined a fundraising course in Romania. He highlights YPM's focus on learning through diverse activities, such as equine therapy and conflict resolution workshops. “It was amazing,” Joshua says, noting how much these new experiences transformed his perspective. Learning about psychology and generational trauma has helped him understand himself and others better and as a result, become a more effective leader.
Developing Leadership Skills
Joshua’s commitment to YPM soon saw him stepping into leadership roles. He helped create youth events and worked with with Find Your Feet, an organisation supporting employment and enterprise training for young people. "Leadership is about staying calm in stressful situations and guiding others,” he says. The leadership experience also expanded his social skills and confidence, especially during his time in Romania, where he interacted with people from diverse backgrounds. “That experience taught me how to connect with people on a deeper level, no matter where they’re from,” he reflects.
His journey through YPM also deepened his commitment to his community. Today, he values YPM's impact on his life and credits the movement with giving him a “second home” in Brixton. Joshua says the bonds he formed with fellow YPM leaders continue to inspire him, fostering a network of support that has transcended the programme.
Launching World Xyen Fashions
Armed with the skills and confidence YPM gave him, Joshua decided to take on the challenge of starting his own clothing line. World Xyen Fashions aims to promote positivity and inclusivity. "It’s been challenging," he admits, noting the steep learning curve he faced. “Everything from budgeting to designing to promoting – I was doing it all myself.” Marketing was one of the biggest hurdles, as he worked hard to find the right audience while keeping within a tight budget. Despite the obstacles, Joshua is proud of what he has achieved, calling it the best venture he’s undertaken over the past year.
Looking back, Joshua feels grateful for the guidance and mentorship he received, particularly through YPM and his growing network. These connections have enabled him to navigate challenges more effectively and he’s already seeing growth in his brand, planning future collaborations that could elevate World Xyen Fashions even further.
Building a Future
Joshua’s story highlights the importance of support and mentorship, something he’s keen to offer others following in his footsteps. His advice to young people looking to start their own businesses is straightforward: “Stay true to your vision. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it.” He encourages young creatives to connect with people who can guide and support them, highlighting that networking is invaluable.
"YPM gave me a family, and that’s priceless,” Joshua says. The YPM community continues to motivate him, even after the programme has ended and he sees them as a core part of his success. Today, as he works to grow his brand and contribute positively to his community, Joshua hopes his journey inspires others to pursue their dreams, proving that determination and support can truly transform lives.
